Embracing Change with Courage: Leading Through the Shifts of Life and Leadership

Spring is here—and with it comes visible reminders of transformation all around us. Trees bloom, the weather shifts, and the world shakes off the stillness of winter. Nature reminds us that change is not only inevitable—it’s necessary.

This month, as we continue our 2025 leadership journey, we focus on a powerful truth: Embracing Change with Courage.

In my decades of leadership—from combat zones to city streets, from national defense to executive coaching—I’ve faced every kind of change imaginable. Some came with warning; others arrived like a thunderclap. Some were welcome, while others were unwelcome and uncomfortable. But every single one required me to lead with courage.

The Inevitability of Change

Change doesn’t ask permission. It disrupts comfort zones, shifts routines, and challenges the familiar. And yet, change is also the doorway to growth, innovation, and impact.

One of the hardest changes I ever faced was deploying to Afghanistan after the attacks of September 11th. Everything shifted in an instant—from strategy to purpose, from peacetime readiness to wartime responsibility. I carried the weight of leading Soldiers into combat and making decisions that would affect lives. I couldn’t control the circumstances, but I could choose how I would lead through them—with courage, clarity, and conviction.

That’s what leaders do: we don’t run from change—we respond to it.

Understanding the Types of Change

In my upcoming book, No Limits! Seven Keys to Life, Legacy, and Leadership, I describe three types of change leaders must recognize and navigate:

1. Revolutionary Change

This is fast, disruptive, and often unexpected. It requires bold decisions, quick pivots, and the ability to stabilize teams in chaos.Example: A global crisis, an organizational restructure, or a personal emergency.

2. Evolutionary Change

This happens gradually over time. It can be subtle but requires consistency, patience, and attention. Leaders who ignore slow change often miss the opportunity to adapt in time.Example: Shifting workplace cultures, generational leadership transitions, or slow-building community needs.

3. Visionary Change

This is the kind of change you lead on purpose. It’s driven by vision, inspired by purpose, and fueled by courage. It challenges the status quo and invites others into a new future.Example: Launching a new initiative, transforming a company, or building a movement.

Each type of change requires a different kind of courage—but all demand intentional leadership.

How to Lead Through Change with Courage

1. Acknowledge the Reality, But Lead with Vision

You can’t lead people through change if you pretend it’s not happening. Be honest. Name what’s shifting. But don’t stop there—paint a picture of what’s possible. Leaders give people hope when everything feels uncertain.

2. Stay Anchored in Your Purpose

When change threatens to shake your confidence, go back to your purpose. Ask yourself:

  • Why am I doing this work?

  • What legacy am I trying to build?

Purpose is the anchor that holds you steady in the storm.

3. Listen to Others—but Don’t Let Fear Lead

During times of change, people need to feel heard. Listen. Engage. Be present. But don’t let fear or resistance keep you from making hard but necessary decisions. Leaders are called to see beyond the moment.

4. Take Courageous Action

Courage doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid. It means you lead anyway. Whether it’s starting something new, letting go of something old, or choosing a new direction—take the step. Your team, your family, your community is watching.

Change Requires Faith

I often return to the words of Isaiah 43:19, where God says:“See, I am doing a new thing!

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”

God doesn’t just allow change—He uses it. He calls us to move forward, to step into new seasons, and to trust Him even when the path isn’t clear.

Whether you’re experiencing personal change, leading your team through transition, or navigating a world that feels increasingly uncertain, don’t fear the shift. Embrace it.

Final Thought

As you move through this season of growth, let me leave you with a simple question:

What is one change you’ve been resisting that you need to embrace with courage?

Write it down. Reflect on it. And ask God for the strength to lead through it with boldness and grace.

Next month, we’ll talk about the power of Empowering Others—because no leader succeeds alone. Until then, lead well and move forward in faith.
