Leadership 2025: A Legacy of Purpose and Impact

As the calendar turns to a new year, we find ourselves standing at the intersection of reflection and anticipation. For me, this moment always brings a sense of gratitude for the journey I’ve traveled, from serving in the Army for 42 years to leading in law enforcement and beyond. These experiences have taught me that leadership isn’t confined to titles or positions—it’s about influence, impact, and leaving a legacy that outlives you.

The start of a new year offers each of us an opportunity to recalibrate and refocus on what truly matters. Whether you’re leading a family, a team, or an organization, the principles of life, legacy, and leadership remain the same. As I reflect on my career and life’s lessons, I want to share a few guiding thoughts to inspire your leadership journey in 2025:

1. Clarify Your Purpose

Great leadership begins with a clear sense of purpose. When I was a young man, my high school yearbook listed my life goals: to join the Army, become a police officer, and marry a sweet, pretty woman who understood me. These goals anchored my decisions, propelling me forward when the road got tough. Keep in mind, if there’s no destination, any road will get you there!

In the same way, entering the new year with clarity about your "why" can help you navigate challenges with confidence. Ask yourself: What do I want to achieve this year? How will my actions align with my purpose?

2. Commit to Excellence

Excellence has been a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy, whether on the battlefield or in the boardroom. Excellence isn’t about perfection—it’s about a relentless commitment to elevate standards, embrace continuous growth, and strive for the extraordinary.

As you lead in 2025, consider where you can raise the bar. Maybe it’s in your personal discipline, your relationships, or your organization’s goals. The pursuit of excellence will inspire those around you and leave a lasting impact.

3. Embrace Change with Courage

Leadership in the Army and as Birmingham’s Police Chief taught me one undeniable truth: change is inevitable. Whether it’s a revolution in strategy or an evolution in thinking, leaders must embrace change with courage and conviction.

As we step into a new year, we are all navigating an uncertain world. But uncertainty is also an opportunity to innovate, adapt, and grow. Revolutionary, evolutionary, or visionary—how will you lead through the changes that come your way?

4. Empower Others

One of the most rewarding aspects of leadership is empowering others to succeed. Whether leading soldiers in Afghanistan or partnering with local leaders to reduce crime, I’ve seen the power of collaboration and shared purpose.

This year, make it a goal to invest in others. Empower your team, your family, or your community by sharing your knowledge, creating opportunities, and building connections. Remember, leadership is a team sport.

5. Focus on Legacy

A new year is more than a new chapter—it’s another step in the story of your legacy. In my upcoming book, I emphasize the importance of making choices that resonate beyond today.

Your actions in 2025 will shape the impact you leave behind. Will you be remembered for your integrity, resilience, and dedication to excellence? The legacy you build now will inspire others long after the year ends.

### Moving Forward Together

As we begin this new year, I’m reminded of the scripture from Proverbs 16:9: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” No matter what challenges or opportunities lie ahead, know that you have the ability to lead with purpose, courage, and grace.

Let’s step boldly into 2025, committed to empowering others, pursuing excellence, and building a legacy that matters. Together, we can make this year not just a new beginning but a transformative journey.

To your success and leadership in the new year,
